New ASIS Research Finds Nearly One in Three Security Professionals Lack Confidence in Emergency Headcounts
FacilityOS-sponsored research finds security professionals have less visibility into visitors and contractors than employees.
TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, September 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Thirty-two percent of security professionals are not confident their organization could account for everyone onsite during an emergency, while only 18 percent are completely confident, according to new ASIS International benchmarking research sponsored by FacilityOS.
The study, Excelling at Security Controls and Visibility, finds that organizations have grown effective at keeping unauthorized people out while struggling to maintain real-time awareness of who is legitimately inside, a gap that is widest for visitors and contractors.
The research, produced by ASIS International Security Issues Research and fielded in May 2026, drew 942 responses from security practitioners and consultants across more than a dozen industries. Nearly half are director level or above, and 80 percent are responsible for more than one facility. Findings cited here come from the practitioner survey, which carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.
Access control measures are effective: nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of respondents reported fewer than one unauthorized access incident per week, regardless of facility size. However, this perimeter strength highlights the more pressing issue: maintaining an up-to-date account of who is inside a facility at any given time.
Accountability inside the facility is a different story, and it is a daily condition rather than an emergency-only one. Only 41 percent of security professionals said they know all visitors in a facility, where they are, and when they leave.
The gap widens for non-employees: 66 percent were completely or mostly confident they could quickly reach staff in an emergency, compared with 53 percent for visitors and contractors.
Visitor management is a persistent challenge. Seventy-two percent of security professionals want to improve their organization’s visitor management processes.
